Coming into the weekend we were really pleased with how the guys have been playing recently. We had a great win against UC Santa Cruz and were looking to validate what we did as we travelled to Hendrix.
AC started out the first half very well. We dominated possesion and were looking very dangerous. Hendrix did a good job of limiting our chances on goal. After our initial push the game settled down and both teams got into their rhythm. Since we were playing on a turf field, the ball played very fast, so we tried to play to feet as much as possible. Despite our good play in the first half, we weren't able to put any points on the board. Our defensive did a good job of not allowing Hendrix to score either. We would go into the half tied 0-0.
It seemed that the halftime break hurt us more than it helped us. We started off the second half slow, and Hendrix created some good opportunities. The game settled down though and we started to gain our composure. We had several good opportunities to take the lead, but weren't able to finish them. For the last 10 minutes the game's pace increased. Hendrix pushed to win the game and we did the same. With 15 seconds to play we collected the ball on our half of the field and found Alex Dawson (Spring, TX) in the middle of the field. Alex played a through ball to Chris Melton (Sherman, TX) who was taken down in the box with just 2.9 seconds to play. The referee awarded us the penalty kick, and Alex stepped up and buried it to give AC the 1-0 victory.
Even though we didn't play our best soccer in the second half, the guys still had a good game. We fought hard and felt like we deserved the win. Thanks to the fans who made the trip to Hendrix. It was great having people there to cheer the team on. GO ROOS!
